Isle of Skye photography:About Ronald MacDonald
Ronald MacDonald OBE is a landscape photographer living in Portree on the Isle of Skye specialising in Isle of Skye landscape photography. As an Isle of Skye photographer, Ronald has been producing and selling landscape photographs of the rugged Skye landscape since the early 1980’s. Although for most of his career he has been a Professor of Economics, latterly at Glasgow University, he has in that time retained a keen interest in landscape photography which he has had more time to pursue since becoming an Emeritus Professor.
As a Skye man, with his patents and all his grandparents hailing from all quarters of this wonderful island, Ronald’s primary love is the landscape of the Hebrides of Scotland, and the Isle of Skye in particular, and he has also had the good fortune to visit many superb landscape opportunities in South America, Australasia and beyond. His Isle of Skye photographs cover all of the key iconic Skye sites, including the Quirang, The Storr, The Fairy Pools, Brothers Point, Neist Point, the Coral Beach and the Cuillin Ridge.
Ronald’s fine art landscape photographic prints (giclee prints) of the Isle of Skye and the Scottish Hebrides are printed on photo rag paper and canvas on Skye, using an Epson Surecolor 12 pigment ink printer, to ensure complete control of the prints. From 2010-2023 Ronald sold many thousands of his prints from An t-Eilean gallery in Portree and also online from his web site and over the years he has also built up a loyal following for his photographs both locally and internationally. A portfolio of his Hebridean photographic prints has appeared in the Outdoor Photography magazine.
Many people who we had never met before, and some who we had, passed through our gallery over time. One of the most interesting visits we had in the gallery was from Erin Burnett, the New York anchor woman of CNN. Erin popped out of the woodwork one day into the gallery with her Uncle Buzz - it turns out we are related through a Stuart connection on our Mother’s sides of the family. Our families back then were cleared off land for sheep at Tormichaig, Skye, where the Skye golf course currently resides. What an interesting connection which is still on going and is quite special given we have a common connection in economics. The link to the video of this connection and Erin’s visit to our gallery is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szn6rpqPxTQ
Although An t-Eilean fine art photographic Gallery in Portree closed in December 2023, it has now been revived as the An t-Eilean Print Room in Portree where all of the prints from our old site are available again plus many more and of course Ronald’s photographic prints are available from his website shop and his prints are shiped all over the world.
